The Calcutta High Court has granted permission for the annual Ram Navami rally to be held on GT Road, overturning Kolkata Police’s decision to deny permission due to security concerns. The rally, which has followed this route for the past 15 years, was initially restricted by police, prompting Hindu organizations, including Anjani Putra Sena, to challenge the decision in court. The court ruled in favor of the petitioners but imposed strict conditions to ensure public safety.
According to the court’s directive, the rally must be conducted without weapons, ammunition, or DJs. The use of bikes has also been prohibited. All processions must follow a single designated route, and organizers have been instructed to maintain order throughout the event. Kolkata Police have been tasked with monitoring the rally and ensuring compliance with all imposed conditions.
The police had initially proposed an alternative route, but organizations such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Durga Vahini opposed the change, insisting on the traditional path. The matter was taken to court, where the petitioners argued that the rally had been conducted peacefully for over a decade and should not be restricted. After reviewing security assessments and arguments from both sides, the court ruled in favor of the rally while enforcing strict guidelines.
Following the verdict, Kolkata Police will deploy additional personnel along GT Road to ensure safety and prevent disruptions. Authorities have been instructed to take immediate action in case of any violations. The decision comes amid heightened security measures across the state during Ram Navami celebrations, with law enforcement agencies on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents.
